چکیده

The results of a numerical study of the magnetic dynamo effect in cylindrical von Kármán plasma flow are presented with parameters relevant to the Madison Plasma Couette Experiment. This experiment is designed to investigate a broad class of phenomena in flowing plasmas. In a plasma, the magnetic Prandtl number Pm can be of order unity i.e., the fluid Reynolds number Re is comparable to the magnetic Reynolds number Rm . This is in contrast to liquid metal experiments, where Pm is small so, Re Rm and the flows are always turbulent. We explore dynamo action through simulations using the extended magnetohydrodynamic NIMROD code for an isothermal and compressible plasma model. We also study two-fluid effects in simulations by including the Hall term in Ohm’s law. We find that the counter-rotating von Kármán flow results in sustained dynamo action and the self-generation of magnetic field when the magnetic Reynolds number exceeds a critical value. For the plasma parameters of the experiment, this field saturates at an amplitude corresponding to a new stable equilibrium a laminar dynamo . We show that compressibility in the plasma results in an increase of the critical magnetic Reynolds number, while inclusion of the Hall term in Ohm’s law changes the amplitude of the saturated dynamo field but not the critical value for the onset of dynamo action. © 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3559472

The Effects of Different SDE Calculus on Dynamics of Nano-Aerosols Motion in Two Phase Flow Systems

Langevin equation for a nano-particle suspended in a laminar fluid flow was analytically studied. The Brownian motion generated from molecular bombardment was taken as a Wiener stochastic process and approximated by a Gaussian white noise. Euler-Maruyama method was used to solve the Langevin equation numerically. The accuracy of Brownian simulation was checked by performing a series of simulati...

Numerical simulation of effect of non-spherical particle shape and bed size on hydrodynamics of packed beds

Fluid flow has a fundamental role in the performance of packed bed reactors. Some related issues, such as pressure drop, are strongly affected by porosity, so non-spherical particles are used in industry for enhancement or creation of the desired porosity. In this study, the effects of particle shape, size, and porosity of the bed on the hydrodynamics of packed beds are investigated with three ...

Simple laminar dynamos

Key words magnetic fields – magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Although current interest in astrophysical dynamo theory is largely focussed on flows with both large-and small-scale motions, historically the study of dynamos driven by laminar flows has been important. Some classical laminar flow dynamos are reviewed. These results were obtained in an asymptotic regime corresponding to small values of sy...

Flow simulation of gallium in a cylindrical annulus in the presence of a magnetic field for improving the casting process

Free convection flow in an enclosure filled with a congealing melt leads to the product with a nonuniform structure involving large grains. The convective flows are decreased by applying an appropriate magnetic field, obtaining uniform and small grain structures. In this work, using the finite volume method, we investigated the application of a magnetic field to the convective heat transfer and...

Numerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder

Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...
